    J8131Problems with the Java 8 Update 131
On Windows 64-bit systems the latest Java update may be problematic. If you had already installed a 64-bit version and allowed Java to Auto-update to this new release, you may have received a 32-bit version instead. See the above information to determine if you have a 32-bit version and, if so, remove ("Uninstall") it. If you ALSO have the 64-bit version of Java 8 Update 131 then you are probably ok and can start up OCHRE from the "Start OCHRE" link on our website, or using any of the themed 64-bit startup links.

Problems installing Java 8 Update 131
Some new issues have been raised with respect to Java, so please read the details below if you are having trouble starting up OCHRE. Java now accommodates the 64-bit system architecture, the use of which is becoming more prevalent among our user base, and so we have set OCHRE to take advantage of this. Overall it will result in a better user experience and so we highly recommend taking the steps to ensure that you are using the most effective configuration.

WhichJavaCheck Which Java Version is Installed
Next, check which version(s) of Java are installed. Go to your System Settings (e.g. "Add or remove programs" or "Programs and Features") and scroll down to find Java listed. If "(64-bit)" is not listed next to the Java version then it is a 32-bit version of Java. Be sure your version of Java matches the Operating System. That is, if you have a 64-bit operating system we recommend you use a 64-bit version of Java.
To get rid of old versions, use the Uninstall option.

If you do not need to Uninstall or Install Java (because you only have 1 version installed and it is the correct version) we suggest you clear the Java cache on your local drive. See the instructions here. There should be no OCHRE-related shortcuts left on your desktop when this process is finished. Also, remove any OCHRE icons or shortcuts you may have pinned to the Taskbar or to the Start Menu.

The standard Measurements hierarchy from the OCHRE master project does not need to be included in the offline session.

    Other Uses of Agnostic Variables
Having originally conceived of the use of agnostic variables for managing measurements, we are finding it to be extremely useful for managing currencies as well, both modern and ancient. One of our projects that tracks the sale of ancient artifacts on modern-day markets can enter price-based data as USD, EUR or GBP, depending on the source of the sale. Another project studying the coins found in hoards all over the Greek world tracks currencies based on staters and tetradrachms. This is obviously a more complex usage since currency values fluctuate with respect to other currencies over time. But the basic strategy works well, and we are working on ways to dynamically adjust the relevant conversion factors as needed in different circumstances (e.g. on a query or view).
    Using Agnostic Variables Offline
Agnostic variables are available for use offline. OCHRE will determine whether or not they are being used and will take along any supporting details it needs for the offline session. The standard Measurements hierarchy from the OCHRE master project does not need to be included in the offline session.
